Safe City Project Shortlisted for the India Prime Minister’s Award

The city of Surat, India—known as the diamond capital of the world—has made waves in the world of security since announcing its “Safe City” project in early 2012. Their cutting-edge network of IP video cameras and security management systems integrated throughout the city has helped reduce crime and improve the safety of its citizens.

In a short span of 10 months, the new surveillance system has already resulted in penalties for 109,000 traffic offenders in the coverage area. Now Surat has another reason to be proud: the city has made the shortlist of candidates eligible to receive the Indian Prime Minister's prestigious award for excellence in public administration.

The safe city surveillance technology, which went live this year in a record of seven months with the support of Verint and its partner Innovative Telecom & Software Pvt Ltd, processes real-time and recorded activity 24/7 through a centralized command, control and communications (C3) center. A new 280-square-foot video wall allows continuous monitoring of several zones. Verint's Nextiva® Video Management Software™ and Physical Security Information Management (PSIM)™ were chosen by the Surat City Police Department to be the critical backbone of the Safe City project.

Work for the second phase is already underway with the goal of installing 1,000 CCTV cameras in a year's time. If Surat wins the Prime Minister’s award, the prize would honor the initiative and cooperation of the public and private sectors working together toward a safer community.
